| Yes, this is the mansion- 1 West Fifty-Seventh Street, built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his wife, Alice Claypoole Gwynne Vanderbilt. They were the grandparents of Helen Varner Vanderbilt's husband, Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr., the IV. It is also where Brigadier General Cornelius III grew up in New York City, and is noted as one of the most lavish and titanic of the Fifth Avenue Vanderbilt mansions. Unfortunately, as with so many structures in our wasteful throw-a-way modern society, this decadent priceless building was demolished in 1927 after only 30 years. | |||||
| This rambling palace belonged to Helen's grandparent-in-laws. And yes, likely one would need a road map to negotiate the cavernous interior. | |||||
