| Jack Frye, president of Transcontinental and Western Air, is shown with his French-born wife, Regine (Jean) Frye. Excellent photo of both, Jack, always looking like he stepped out of a GQ fashion magazine, and Jean, who was a stunningly beautiful woman, is wearing a elegant white coat with fur collar and holding a luxurious sable fur stole. Mrs. Frye was formerly a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. San Francisco royalty! The Fryes were on a west-coast tour of airplane facilities. Even though the article says the photo was captured at a San Francisco Hotel, it is obvious they are at the airport, evidenced by a DC3 behind them. Likely they had just arrived on the TWA airliner to the usual throng of reporters. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Above, is a wonderful photo of aviation legend Frye, standing in front of a 3- blade Hamilton Standard Propeller. It is hard to discern, but the plane appears to be a Douglas Commercial 2, this due to the round engine air intake. Dressed impeccably as always, this man represented TWA like no other figure head ever did! He is widely considered the "Father of TWA." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Trailblazer- Jack Frye established the first passenger air service in 1927, from Los Angeles-Phoenix-Tucson-Douglas-El Paso, with his then, Standard Air Lines, a company he founded, and was president of. He is also responsible for the first transcontinental air service for the United States! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| New Air Line Inaugurated | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| November 1, 1938-- Phoenix, Arizona Inauguration of direct air service between Phoenix and San Francisco will be observed with a brief colorful ceremony when the first Skyliner arrives from the Golden City this afternoon. Piloting the plane of the Transcontinental and Western Air Line, will be Jack Frye, president of the company and a pioneer Arizona aviator. Aboard will be a party of aviation and post office department officials. Regular stops on the route are Oakland and Fresno, California, and Las Vegas and Boulder City, Nevada. The new route connects at Las Vegas with the TWA Transcontinental Continental Line. Passengers, Mail and Express will be carried. |

| Mayor, Walter J. Thalheimer of Phoenix received a message from Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia of New York, saying-- "It gives me great pleasure to send you this message of greeting which will be delivered by the first TWA plane into Phoenix on the occasion of the new line south from Las Vegas, Nevada. I am especially delighted that this new airway will also later serve Prescott, Arizona, where I spent so many years of my younger life." Prescott and Kingman are due to be added as regular stops on the new route. The first northbound plane of the new service will leave here at 3:15 p.m., reaching San Francisco at 8:30 p.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| While it looked today as if Prescott had been neglected or overlooked in the inauguration of the Phoenix- Las Vegas air line by TWA, there is still reason to hope the big shops will be landing here before so very long and that Prescott then will be a daily stop for the mail and passenger planes. The following telegram, along these lines, was received this afternoon by city officials from Congressman, John R. Murdock: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| "It the hope of Arizona and the intent of recent federal legislation and its administration, that Prescott and Kingman shall be on the Phoenix-Las Vegas air service being inaugurated today. It is unfortunate that the initial flight cannot make these stops now, because of the condition of these fields." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Phoenix November 1 Arizona's Grand Canyon of the Colorado, hitherto an all impassable barrier to interstate commerce between this commonwealth and its neighbors to the north, formally was bridged today. It was an aerial truss, fabricated by California engineers into the stout wings of a TWA Douglas transport, that finally spanned the great chasm to end the north-south isolation of this state. |

| Importance of the event to Arizona was reflected in the presence Governor R. C. Stanford, U.S. Senator Carl Hayden, Mayor Walter J. Thalheimer and other leading citizens at Sky Harbor ceremonies inaugurating daily passenger, air-mail and cargo service over TWA's new Phoenix-San Francisco airway via Boulder City, Nevada. Also participating was Jack Frye, president of TWA, and Arizona's "No. 1" pilot who flew here at the controls of the initially arriving plane, and other high-ranking company executives. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Bearing in mind that until today airmail to Salt Lake City has been routed via Los Angeles, that there is still no direct rail into Nevada and Utah and that only the recently completed concrete roadway of Boulder Dam itself and the remote Lee's Ferry bridge afford highway communication, the importance of this new aerial artery is apparent. The new air-line provides daily service with arrival schedule set for 1:53, with departure from the Phoenix Sky Harbor at 3:15 p.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| A couple of the images on this page were from Jack Frye's personal collection. They are just a fraction of what was once compiled by Jack. These precious memories would have been lost forever if it had not been for the generosity of Joan LaPlace. This special lady cannot be thanked enough for her thoughtfulness in sharing them with this Web Site and later, with my encouragement, with Jack's only daughter, Nevajac Frye! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
